Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market & Artisans Fair

The Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market & Artisans Fair is conveniently located off Kaleiopapa St, about 5 minutes walking distance from Hale Hāhālua. Walk downhill towards Keauhou Bay, and the Market can be found on the left side of the street at the intersection with Ehukai Street.

The market takes place every Wednesday from 9am until 2pm; depending on tourist activity, they are often there on Fridays as well. For an updated schedule, please visit their website (see below) and take a look at the list of vendors.

You will find about two dozen vendors selling paintings, textiles, photographs, jewelry, soaps, cosmetics, wood art, coffee, macadamia nuts, honey and much more. There is a limited selection of food and beverages offered here as well (try the tacos!).

We visit the market every time we are on Island, and you can find items we bought there all throughout the condo. ^^ What makes this market special is the fact that all products are manufactured on the Big Island. If you’re looking for souvenirs or gifts to bring home with you, why not support the local economy and buy local!

Keauhou Farmer’s Market

Keauhou Farmer’s Market, organized by the Kona County Farm Bureau, takes place every Saturday from 8 am until noon on the parking lot of the Keauhou Shopping Center. Only 0.9 miles away from our condo, you can walk there and shop a variety of food items from local farms such as fresh tropical fruits and veggies, baked goods, coffee, honey, and much more. Flowers and bouquets are also available.

While you’re there, get a freshly brewed coffee from White Nene Coffee Company and enjoy the vast ocean views from the world’s most scenic shopping center parking lot. A list of market vendors can be found here: https://keauhoufarmersmarket.com/vendors.

There are no arts and crafts sold at this Farmers’ Market. Your best bet for those items is the Ho’oulu Community Farmers’ Market & Artisans’ Fair just down the road from Hale Hāhālua, off Kaleiopapa Street.

KTA Super Stores

KTA Super Stores (yes, plural) was founded in 1916 by Koichi & Taniyo Taniguchi. Starting with one location in Waiakea (Hilo), KTA has grown into a small chain of supermarkets with seven locations in Hilo, Kealakekua, Waimea, Waikoloa Village, Kailua-Kona, Puainako, and Keauhou.

If you like to shop at foodland, you will appreciate KTA as well. Both chains’ strength is the diverse, extensive, and delicious range of local and US food items. They have a great bakery, excellent(!) poke, a great selection of cheeses, and local produce. If you need to grab a quick bite to take with you on your daily adventures, you can be sure to find something tasty and fresh in their convenience section, such as fruit salads or sandwiches.

While KTA Super Stores is more expensive than Costco or Walmart, their variety of goods makes up for it. Since we like to support local businesses, we usually split up our shopping and make sure that we do not only shop at the nationwide chains.

Last but not least, the KTA Super Store Keauhou is located only 0.9 miles away from our condo, at the Keauhou Shopping Center (KSC), which means you could actually choose to walk there. The spectacular ocean views from the KSC parking lot never cease to amaze us and are certainly a big incentive to visit.

Magics Beach Grill

Magics Beach Grill is named for the beach next to the restaurant, also known as Disappearing Sands Beach. From their outdoor ocean front seating area, sunset views are amazing. You can also spot bodyboarders off Magics Beach from most of their outdoor tables, and marvel at the white sandy beach that turns into a rocky shore in winter. We have been to Magics many times and have never been disappointed. They have a fairly constant, delicious base menu, padded with scrumptious seasonal specials that change on a regular basis. Service is usually very attentive and fun, and they will happily recommend the perfect drink to accompany your mood or choice of meal. According to their website, they try to source locally and their specials are based on seasonally available produce.

Magics is perfect for a romantic/chill/boozy and always tasty dinner with your partner or friends.

Only one vegetarian entrée and a few pupus/sides, though – veggie lovers may go hungry.

Rating

Don’t miss Magic’s while you’re on the Big Island. If you are in for a smaller treat, visit their Beach Shack for breakfast or lunch!

Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill

Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill offers a menu which is based on locally sourced ingredients. Don’t be fooled by the humble exterior, Jackie Rey’s is definitely upscale dining when it comes to taste and, yes, price. The menu features American classics with an Island flair. All dishes we had so far were well presented and tasted great. If you’re up for a cocktail, try their Liliko’i Martini!

Vegetarian members of your party, disappointingly, will have to do with a salad or the one vegetarian pasta dish.

They have opened a second location in Hilo in 2016, for when you venture to the Eastern side of the island. That one is on our list of places to try out.
